ICQ Session 01

Date: 9 September 2001

Time: 9.00pm ( 9.45pm) – 11.50pm

Attendance: HP, PK, DT

Absent       : JS

Next session: Monday 13 August, 9.30pm

These are not minutes, they’re the results of our discussion, covering travel in Spain and misc items.

Misc.

Council came to the following conclusions:

1.       Individual money matters will now be handled by individual team members. (ie. Credit, cash & traveler’s cheques)

2.        The appointed Treasurer, PK, will still maintain accounts of shared finances.

3.       HP strongly recommends that PK and DT directly pursue matter of their plane tickets personally.  Contact JS for agent details.

4.       Team members are to acknowledge receipt of e-mails and messages to facilitate smoother communications.

Travel in Spain

Council decided that:

1.       Portugal will be eliminated from itinerary because of the need for entry Visas.

2.       Europass will be used sparingly in Spain to reduce travel costs.

3.       Buses are more economical in Spain (& sometimes can be faster)

4.       Rail travel at night is not advisable (this covers all countries).  However, bus travel at night is acceptable.

Please go to the Main Map Link to view updated map. Take me ther!!!

To sum up, this is the travel itinerary:

BILBAO – ZARAGOSA – MADRID – TOLEDO – MADRID – SEVILLE – CORDOBA – ?GIBRALTAR? – GRANADA – BARCELONA

Travel costs

I did some calculations.

A Europass Youth 2001 10 day ticket costs RM 1425 (US$370)

                                    15 day ticket costs RM 1850 (US$482)

This works out to:          10 day ticket RM 142.50 / travel day

15 day ticket RM 123.50 / travel day

Note : At this stage we will have to produce two sets of calculations, one for the 10 day ticket (10D) and one for the 15 day ticket (15D).

HENCE, only trips of more than RM 140 / 120 respectively will be undertaken with our Europass.

For Spain, buses overwhelm trains in terms of costs, so buses will be the main mode of transport. Trains will be taken whenever necessary but none of them warrant the use of the Europass with the exceptions of:

1. Madrid – Cordoba    (RM 176)

2. Granada – Barcelona (RM 126)

Please note that there will be charges on top of the fares for high speed trains and night trains.

Total travel in Spain by bus only (except Granada – Barc?)

Bypassing Gibraltar     = RM 347.00

Through Gibraltar        = RM 420.00

There is only one train for Granada – Barcelona. Hopefully it is a night train because we’ll be wasting a lot of precious daylight otherwise.  JASON pls check in your Frommers for more info, our LPs don’t tell us the time, or how much buses cost to Barc.

Based on Document D – Budget 01, I budgeted RM 1000 for extra travel expenses (on top of 10D)

So, remaining extra travel expenses budget stands at RM 580.00.

Treasurer, please update your accounts.

Outstanding items

There are a couple of items that I forgot to bring up:

1.       We must obtain a copy of the ‘European Thomas Cook Timetable’ of trains to further facilitate our planning. DT, if you could please check on the Net.

2.       We must go through Document B - Baggage Checklist 02 (updated 02.08.01).  The document was sent under Europe2001-package03 on the same date.

Our next session on Monday 9.30pm will cover France and Switzerland, ppl, so read up.
